Thomas Irven class at the CMW TLC (9/28)

About this event

Thomas Irven will teach a day-long class
at CMW's Turning Learning Center in Arden, NC

Sunday, September 28, 2025

About the class

A HOLLOW BALL ORNAMENT WITH TWO DISCS AND A FINIAL

The class will concentrate on spindle working techniques including end-grain hollowing and sizing tenons that fit their mortises properly. There is a chance that some bowl turning techniques might be used.

The ornamental discs that will be made can be completed with the wood grain orientation either parallel for spindle turning techniques or perpendicular to the lathe bed and using bowl turning techniques. These discs will be decorated using an Elf tool or a chatter tool.

The finial for the ornament will be turned as a straight spindle. There will also be an introduction to off-center turning using a regular 4-jaw chuck with the #1 jaws and I will have my Escoulen eccentric chuck as well.

The use of dyes and bleach on various parts of the ornament will be explained and discussed.

Notes for prospective class registrants
